Lesson #13 // Wilbur ‘Bad’ Bascomb – Hare Krishna (excerpt 3)

This lesson is the last of three, if you missed it, here is the – first and second.

The refrain builds on simple harmony changes (D-C-G), but just watch (listen) what Wilbur does ;) The first two bars seem plain simple ‘just’ a few dead notes but listen to the original and check out how that locks in with the drummer. In the second two bars, instead of using just the roots,  the harmonies are once again spelled out – the beginning is a funky octave hit, and then basically a sort of a walking bass line outlining the chords follows, but of course spiced with a grooveish feel. Notice the usage of open strings which are even more important in the fitfth and sixth bar: basically a major chord is voiced (D-Fsharp) using the D open string and then a lighting fast triplet fill is played, the right hand just rakes the muted notes, and suddenly we should arrive at the other end of the fingerboard on a low G. That’s fretboard gymnastics for sure.

And if that is not sweaty enough, another musical style approaches us through the last part of this line : there are some very cool slides and a sixteenth note fill in the last two bars which remind me of Blues or Bluegrass guitarist or banjo players – a curious fact that Wilbur also played on an album entitled “Black Grass Music” – similar lines to be heard there as well.

Well, these are just another 8 bars from Hare Krishna, I hope with the other two lessons, you can pickup the ‘Wilburisms’ and transcribe the rest of the song – it is definitely fun to learn.

Lesson #12 // Wilbur ‘Bad’ Bascomb – Hare Krishna (excerpt 2)

This lesson is the second part of this lesson. Third part should arrive in a day :)

In this instance, we go into the bridge (sort of) section – it begins with a pumping line of 4 bars with sixteenth notes, quite a task to get it done clean with all the dead and muted notes at the original fast tempo. After that, from one string the pumping line opens up and gives you a new challenge by having the same pulse on 3 strings instead of one using only simple fifths and octaves (F-C-F octave). For that part you can choose two fingerings – either to use your pinky to fret both the fifth and the octave, or to use your ring and pinky to fret the fifth and the octave – just experiment around with it and find out which is more comfortable for you.

Then comes the part which is most probably slapped on the record, still, I decided to use my fingers and powerful picking instead since I am (still) not that good at slappin’ and poppin’. Otherwise, I also noticed watching Marcus Miller that sometimes you cannot ‘hear’ a difference between light slapping and hard fingerstyle if the bass is active. I am also pretty sure Wilbur has an active circuit in his P-bass, so I cannot really decide how this part really was played – in the end, it’s your choice how you master this part :)

Lesson #11 // Wilbur ‘Bad’ Bascomb – Hare Krishna (excerpt 1)

Okay, so you probably know that i am quite a Wilbur fan, and you probably saw some Hair covers on my previous channel or saw my recent attempt on Hare Krishna here.

And now, here is the first lesson for it – there will be three lessons, I will pick three excerpts where he plays fun parts or some crazy fills for you!

This first excerpt goes into the very first verse where the bass comes in – there is no foreplay ladies and gents, Wilbur hits it immediately :)

By utilizing the open strings, and doing muted percussive notes the bass just grabs you from the first bar and then it pulls you with a slide up to higher registers where he pops in some open string notes as well (all chord notes!!) and another amazing flick before he goes back to low notes, and then, for the second time, we can hear a great variation on this heavenly line.

For the great relaxed slides, listen to the original recording as well, since the feel is pretty hard to get, erhmm, for me as well ;S The trick is to hold down both notes while sliding up (Eb and A) and when you arrive on the target fret, only the higher note should be voiced, the second, lower note is muted somewhere in between ;) it is quite a challenge to arrive on the correct time on the correct fret, i hear myself a bit shaky with the metronome, but i hope you get the idea.

As for the fingering – experiment with your own, since i found a rather uneconomical fingering to be working for me – the second bar’s first few notes could be rather played with my left pinky, instead of my index, but somehow, it stuck with me that way.

Well, have fun with these slides and pop-corn machine notes, in the next lesson we will focus on ‘bridge” section.

Part 1 is here, or here.

YouTube Preview Image

Well, here is the second part of Jeff Berlin’s Bach – you can find the first one with a longer desrciption here! Stay tuned once again, two more parts are following!

When I recorded the Bona-lesson, I decided to take my bass to a pro and set it up – that happened now, and all I can say – it makes a huge difference. Jeff talked about lightening your touch on the bass, and wow. Years of stupidity on my side. A well setup bass is so much more fun and confidence to play – the guy who set it up for me just did an amazing fretjob, adjusted the neck, tightened the neckpocket and now my little bass has incredibly low action with a nice growl. Remember, we are talking about a Squier standard JB here! I encourage you to spend a little money on that if you are still a beginner.

Bear this in mind while learning this piece: let the amp do the work, and light your touch on both hands. The lighter you pluck, the faster you get. But begin slow to become even, record yourself and listen to yourself so you can spot the weak points :) Have fun!

Lesson #7 // Jeff Berlin – Bach (part1)

YouTube Preview Image

At www.digthatbass.com, you can freely download this lesson in Guitarpro format after a free registration!

Jeff Berlin is not only a monster player packed with musicality, technique and enormous mental awareness of what he is playing, he is also a great educator. I have read tons of articles, posts about or by him, and I have gained gems of knowledge. If you are interested, search for those material – for some people, it might be offensive what he says, but I strongly recommend reading his Facebook page, or interviews with him – you don’t have to agree fully, but he has some very-very reasonable and simple thoughts to consider. One of the funniest and humblest posts was about his past intstructional video – you can read it here ;)

So, Bach, prelude in C minor. Classical stuff is always extremely difficult to play. You have to be consistent, you have to execute technique with musicality. Begin REEEALLLY slow since all your fingers have to be used and you have to make sure every note is just long enough – no choking, no longer notes.

Being said that, I can also say that if you are in need of a warm up exercise – this is it. Actually, this is an exercise that can change your playing as well – it moves all your fingers on both hands and teaches you to loosen up while it is quite musical. To reach (or go beyond) the speed Jeff has reached, you have to lighten your touch – both on the right and left hand – let the amp do the work.

On your left hand, try to play with your fingertips – when fretting a note, try to loosen your grip and experiment how hard you have to press down in order to make that note ring. You will find that usually a lot less pressure is enough than you are using. Also, move it as little as you can – if you have ever watched Gary Willis closely, he barely moves his hands!

The same advice goes for the right hand – if you play as lightly as you can, you can save energy and boost your speed. Basically that’s what a ramp is for – it prevents your fingers to dig too much between the strings and the body of the guitar, so it saves you energy and movement. If you don’t have a ramp, you can play exactly over the pickup, or play really lightly, like Gary Willis.

Finally, there is one more thing – I have read an advice for piano players playing this piece – “performers have to control their virtuosity and avoid overdoing it.” Article can be read here, I have used this page for the harmony analysis for the tab – if you have time, or you are interested,  it is amazing to go beyond “bass” and read the analysis of the harmony. (I have to make a remark here, in the GuitarPro file, you can usually find chord diagrams. This time the Ddim7/C diagram is not there since GuitarPro has some limitations – it cannot displays chords which nead greater stretch than 4 frets. So, this chord cannot be voiced on the 4 string easily, you would need more hands or to make big stretches. Ddim7/C basically means you have a Ddim7 chord with a C as a bass note on top). Enjoy!

Rajoe’s Lesson#6 // Richard Bona – Dina Lam

YouTube Preview Image

Chord time with Richard Bona (and me, haha)! At www.digthatbass.com, you can freely download this lesson in Guitarpro format after a free registration!

You know, I was fortunate enough to see Richard Bona several times live (he kind of likes Hungary and (allegedly) our national dish, Gulasch as well) and I even attended a free clinic by him – and all I can say that he is such a great soulful musician. Yeah, he is funny and yeah, he rips the bass but he is more a musician to me than a bass player. Why am I saying that? I may not like all of his music, but why I love him is that how he always remains humble to MUSIC itself. Just watch this, or that! Playful, humorous, emotional, and simply amazing. And he has come a long way. He knows the flashy stuff – but he treats it like flashy stuff. Have you seen this for example? He plays here with Joe Zawinul and he really gets angry in the middle of his solo piece and then plays a bunch of very fast licks and the audience stops talking and start clapping. See what I mean? He does the same thing now, but instead of staying angry, he made a shift and learned to turn the bad thing that irritated him into a good one, and with a little humor he managed to reach an intimate contact with the audience through his “performance”. So, I really think highly of him in that manner.

Dina Lam is a beautiful example of his music, talents and skills, it is a really fun song to learn. and here we go with the bass intro! The main chord used in the intro is an FmAdd9 (derived from the first four notes: F-C-G-G#) and it is embellished with notes of the Fm scale – all the notes used are part of the Fm scale and the top F note is left to ring out through out the second bar. I guess, second bar could also be identified as a C#Maj9/Cm or an Fm7 but for me, it is much easier to think of it as simply variations of Fm.

The right hand is using a 3 finger picking pattern – if you are not used it, it is a good starting exercise, on the video you can clearly see the picking part.

The left hand dexterity and stamina is put to great test in this excerpt. Here, I have to note that this one is possibly harder than it seems, especially, when you go slow. Chording on the bass can be physically hard sometimes. Usually, the chord-type bass players have their basses set up with very low action and very light strings – that makes it easy to play complicated finger pattern chords as well.

I don’t know about your bass, but I am neither having light strings or my action low, so this time, I have really felt that my bass really should be set up properly – holding down those chords in the half-speed version really hurt towards the end, I am sure you can hear that some notes are kind of choked….to be honest, I usually tweak around my bass by myself but I never took it out to a professional guy, but I guess it is high time now! :) Anyway, that being said, if you are new, or not really accustomed to playing chords, don’t push too hard and don’t bust your fingers and joints, since this can be a demanding piece.

You really have to experiment with a left-hand and finger position that suits you best – you have to hold down notes to ring out while doing pull-offs. I can tell you no magic formula, as we have different hand and finger sizes, but if you watch my hands on the video, I placed my left hand in a way, that the tip of my left-index is just barely fretting the F note on the E string – that way, I could divert my index-strength to the other 3 strings below and make them ring throughout the second/fourth/sixth bar. You can also experiment with shifting tension from the top of your index to the root of your index in the second/fourth/sixth bar.

You can also notice that there is a slight mistake at 0.19.I left it there intentionally. In order to strain my fingers less, I figured that at the end of every second bar, I can relax my left-index for a very short time without interrupting the line – that way i win some stamina and prepare my fingers for the next round. The mistake is that I actually lifted my left-index, so the note did not ring out – what you can learn from this is that you can make your life easier by coming up with personal tricks (a bit of resting at every second bar) and you have to do it right :)

The video does not intend to violate any laws or copyrights, it is to be used for educational purposes (fair use). The original song is available for purchase and listening at:

But it is not THAT hard to transpose on bass – or guitar for that matter, since we can move most shapes and patterns up and down the neck with the same fingering.

Rajoe’s Lesson#5 // Evan Marien – Eternals and Apathetics (intro)

I remember finding the first videos of Evan Marien on YouTube and I was amazed from the first moment. I found that while he is one of the pioneers who steps out of the ‘traditional’ bass role, and keeps pushing the boundaries of music by exploring the world of electronica and effects, he still has melody at the heart of his playing. I really love how he is simplistic and complex at the very same time, and i really think you can learn a lot just by listening to his music. Evan recently decided to release educational videos on his channel, check him out, it is very worthwhile!

So, this time we go quite technical on the 5 string, you’ll probably have to sit down for weeks to get this under your fingers! Eternals and Apathetics is an improvisational piece and it is played freely as well I chose this little intro riff-kinda-thing since it stuck in my ears, and i really wanted to learn it ….but during learning it, i noticed that besides being technical it really makes you think about every single note and in that sense it is quite a musical lesson as well. I’ll hope you’ll get what i mean when you learn it ;)

The riff incorporates the usage of the open G string – you really have to pay attention to it, it should not stand out, it should not be choked (like i did once on the slow version) It should be flowing – begin slow, and gradually build up speed so your left and right hand can learn to co-operate perfectly. The chords are played with three fingers (thumb-index-middle)

As it is a free piece, harmony is approximate, i did my best, but better ask Evan about the exact ones ;) The time signature is also kind of tricky, but for the sake of simplicity, the notation shows you a time signature of 4/4 and every fourth bar there is a 1/4 bar. Sounds complicated, but here’s how you should think about it: the metronome is set on straight 4s, and when you picked the last G note in the third bar, you should hold it for two fourth notes, and then the line begins again. More simply, after you picked that G note, count together with the metronome 1…2.. and on 3, the line begins again. Dig? :)

Rajoe’s Lesson#4 // Avishai Cohen – It’s been so long

Avishai Cohen is one of my favorite upright bassists – his playing is characterized by an enormous musical power, driving rhythm and a very melody-centered approach. I’ve seen him live with his trio (Shai Maestro, Amir Bresler) and it was one of my most memorable concerts ever – simply amazing, masterful, emotional and mind-boggling… i can’t praise this guy enough. I can really encourage you to check out his music if you haven’t already – he is amazing both live and on the record.

It’s been so long is a song from the album Aurora – the song’s raw power and beauty is in its simplicity – there is only bass and vocals. Avishai himself sings over his bass-playing and towards the end of the song, Karen Malka joins the vocals. The song itself is played freely, melody and bass is played simultaneously – if you want a challenge, try singing over it (i can’t :))

If you really want to compare it to something, you can say that it is inspired by Jaco, it is like a vocal-bass interpretation of Continuum….but don’t misunderstand me, it is an original on its own ;)

With this lesson I learned how hard it is to play really slow – as the original is at 95 bpm, the half tempo is around 48 – you will see and hear that at this speed it is very hard to play exactly on time – here and there are, i made some minor slips in time, i have to work on that at that tempo :)

This A minor groove uses the “left hand tap” originally one of Abe Laboriel’s many slap techniques but widely popularized by  Victor Wooten ,it requires some left hand strength (or low action).
The main figure is Tap, Thumb, Pluck – Tap, Thumb, Pluck…
Otherwise there is good use of the open strings, i love the crispness of the open G and D string

L362 Cool bass run in Em using scale substitutions

YouTube Preview Image

Backing track,Tab and fretboard view in end of video

Theorywise im playing in a Em dorian mode (E, F#, G, A, B, C#, D) and here im using scale snippets from the F# minor pentatonic scale (the first part) and the Bminor pentatonic scale (the second part)
The Em dorian mode is starting on the 2nd step of the D Major scale, and that scale contains
3 major chords/scales

D Major (Ionian mode or 1st step/mode)
G Major (Lydian mode or 4th step/mode)
A Dominant Major ( Mixolydian mode or 5th step/mode)

and 3 minor chords/scales
E minor (Dorian mode or 2nd step/mode)
F# minor  (Phrygian mode or 3rd step/mode)
B minor  (Dorian mode or 2nd step/mode)

I often just use the pentatonic versions of the above scales
and in this case i use the F#m and Bm penatonic scale
( I of course also use the Em pentatonic scale but not in this example)

Bass impro using scale substitution – major over minor

CORRECTION!! Due to a video edit mistake, the video sounds a semitone note higher than recorded – sounds like Eb Major over Fminor – my apologies for the confusion it may have induced.

A short quick video oof my practicing playing D Major / and D major pentatonic over a Em7 (Dorian) chord groove (courtesy George Benson)

The Em dorian scale is the 2nd step of a D Major scale – the same notes but laid out differently. I frequently use the substitution technique to avoid always playing root note based patterns.
It maybe it sounds like im playing over a E minor dorian scale (which i also am in a way, see above) , but im THINKING in D Major.

The loop is from George Benson’s The Thinker from the album That’s Right.
Its a Gm7 C7 vamp – and is mostly the Gm dorian mode – i give some scale tips in the end of the video
Ive learned a lot about improvising over the Dorian minor mode by listening to George Benson and in particular this album.
Great thing about playing the thinner strings is that you get blazing speed compared to normal bass, its good for the confidence ;-)

Scales possible are more or less all the diatonic modes of the Major scale (actually its just the different steps of the same F Major scale)

1 F Major ionian , F Major pentatonic
2 Gm dorian (the “root” mode of this tune), Gm pentatonic, G minor blues scale
3 Am phrygian, Am pentatonic
4 Bb Major lydian, Bb Major pentatonic
5 C Mixolydian (C dominant 7), C Major pentatonic

Weekly Bass Tip – Playing with a Capo!

Playing with a Capo isn’t normally part of our repertoire as bassists, but if you approach it a certain way, it can unlock some interesting possibilities for the creative bass player.

Like somebody said in the YouTube comments, you can also experiment with short scale bass timbres and feel. Simply detune your bass a whole step to D standard (DGCF) and put a capo on the 2nd fret – voila! Short scale bass. Make it as short as you’d like by detuning the bass lower and lower and raising the fret higher and higher.

“Sexy MF” is a single released on June 30, 1992, by Prince and The New Power Generation, from the Love Symbol album.[1] The B-side was “Strollin’”, from the previous year’s Diamonds and Pearls. The UK CD single had a third track, “Daddy Pop”, also from Diamonds and Pearls. The song (named after the chorus line “You sexy motherfucker”) caused some controversy,[2] and an edited version, “Sexy Mutha,” was created for radio and the music video, as well as the “clean version” of the U.S. album.

“Sexy MF” is a merger of “old school” funk with modern R&B music. The song is built around the drums and bass, though the bass-line is somewhat subdued. Added to this is a consistent electric rhythm guitar undertone and horn stabs from the NPG Hornz. Throughout the song, the horns are given the chance to shine, along with a sax solo from Brian Gallagher. Musical solos are also provided by Levi Seacer, Jr. (guitar) and Tommy Barbarella (organ). The music and most of the lyrics were composed by Prince, while Seacer came up with the chorus and the song’s title. Tony M. delivers a rap which he wrote. Recently, it has been covered by the Dave Matthews Band as a segue into their hit “Jimi Thing.”

The song was recorded in Paisley Park Studios’ Studio A. The title line was recited into a Shure SM57 by Levi Seacer, Jr.

Bass Chords and Drone Tones

Some ideas I came up with for using simple 2 note bass chords with some drone tones (strings) mixed in. Hopefully, there might be something in these videos, a bass player might find interesting or useful. :) Or amusing even. :P Thanks for viewing my vids. Both videos in the wonderful key of A.

“Déjà Vu” is a song by American singer-songwriter Beyoncé Knowles, featuring vocals by rapper Jay-Z. It was produced by Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins and Knowles for her second solo album, B’Day (2006). “Déjà Vu” is an R&B song, which incorporates elements of the 1970s funk and soul music. Its music is largely based on live instrumentation, including bass guitar, hi-hat, horns, except Roland TR-808 drum machine, which is a non-live instrument. The song’s title and lyrics refer to a woman being constantly reminded of a past lover.

“Déjà Vu” was released as the album’s lead single to US radios on June 24, 2006. The song received generally mixed to positive critical reviews. Many critics noted the similarities of “Déjà Vu” with Knowles’ own 2003 song “Crazy in Love”. Critics commended the assertiveness and the sensuality with which Knowles sings the lyrics and compared her vocal delivery to that of Tina Turner in the late 1980s. “Déjà Vu” and its Freemasons club remix version received three nominations at Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical at the 2007 Grammy Awards. It was recognized as the Best Song of 2006 at the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards.

Commercially, “Déjà Vu” peaked at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. It topped the Hot Dance Club Play chart, the Hot Dance Singles Sales chart, and the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The song was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Déjà Vu peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart and generally reached the top 20 in Europe. The song’s accompanying music video was directed by Sophie Muller. About 5,000 fans petitioned online for a re-shoot of the video, complaining among others, the lack of theme, the wardrobe choice, and the seemingly sexual interactions between Knowles and Jay-Z.
