Why donate?

You probably have noticed that… all lessons are free.
And you know..
I would love – to teach you all the things I know, but it takes me time and effort to come up with new stuff, whether it is videos, articles or just general advice on playing the electric bass – for instance – I plan on doing a whole beginner section with all the exercises / things aspiring bassplayers should know and strive for..
Id like to do it much more than now, but I need to eat too…

Not that you need to have a bad conscience or anything for using the site without contributing, but those of you that can afford to donate to this site please do;-)

There are several ways you can support / donate to playbassnow.com

Direct donation via Paypal.com

The most secure online payment system to my knowledge

Choose your preferred currency here:

And you should know that all donations over 10$ will recieve 10 selected “Bass lick of the day” transcriptions (standard notation with tablature + TAB) as a token of appreciation;-)
Read more about that HERE

Direct bank transfer

In case you dont want to use creditcard online, then you can transfer directly to my bank account
IBAN: DK4130003113645415
BIC: DABADKKK

Please send me an email afterwards, so i know who you are and can thank you properly

Buy me something nice ?

I can always use a set of strings, some picks, a new cable, a book, a bass…
Amazon.co.uk or thomann.de are my favourite places to buy stuff online (I prefer the european sites , since im not an US citizen )
Things i can use right away (no socks please):

DR Sunbeams nickel wound strings or any nickel strings you would like me to try;-) (I prefer standard gauge 45 – 105)
Jim Dunlop picks 0.88 – 12 Pack
Jack cables
Maybe a subscription to Bassplayer magazine
An old stompbox?
An old bass? – maybe i can bring some new life to it:-)

My address is
Thomas Risell (Ok, its out – marloweDK isn’t my real name…)
Nørre Søgade 31A, 3tv
DK-1370 Copenhagen
Denmark
And again remember to tell me who you are.

Can you support the site in other ways?

Well, checking out the links on the site:
My recommendations of learning materials and recorded music can be purchased from Amazon, where I get a ()small percentage of a sale.

The ads for the Korg Pandora PX4D I have used a lot for recording videos and the Transcribe transcribing software I use to learn songs/solos/licks is worth checking out too (a full 30 day demo of the Transcribe program can be downloaded via the links)
Also worth mentioning are the cheap chinese-made SX basses in the 100 – 180$ price range which can be purchased via rondomusic.com, I have a fretless and a shortscale bass I use as piccolo, lots of fun for very little money.

Did you like this?

If so, please bookmark it,
tell a friend
about it.

Hi Thomas,

I’v been playing guitar for some 30 years and dabbled a bit with the Bass but recently got the urge to try and learn a bit more and found some of your excellent videos on YouTube. This inspired me to get a new Bass (Squier Vintage Modified Jazz 77) and also led me to PlayBassNow.com which I think is fanatastic resource for any Bass Player. I have learnt so much from your videos and from the other guest teachers over the past couple of weeks. I really like your playing and teaching style. I have made the $30 donation and looking forward to going through the downloads. Thanks for building such a great resource and in sharing your musical knowledge , its really inspired me to play Bass (I can’t put the thing down !) and has also improved my timing and playing on the guitar.

Cheers – Chris

Hello Thomas,
I have just left a donation and hope to send more. I have been playing for over 30 years but sadly I can’t gig any more owing to illness. I was about to pack it all in until I came across you on youtube. I went out and bought my first jazz bass and started practicing again. You are a truly talented musician.

Thanks for getting out of a tired old groove.

This is an incredibly inspirational site for bass players. I stumbled across some of Thomas’ videos a few months ago on various sites and was instantly impressed with his groove, sound, ease and style. I totally agree what others have said about his bass tuition style from the glimpses I’ve seen of it. Real class.

I’m half way through the R&B Bass Masters book, but soon (maybe in parallel) I’ll start building some sort of curriculum with the amazingly broad material here. I can’t wait! In the meantime I feel strongly enough about what you’re doing here Thomas and the benefit you’re giving to the bass community that I’ll donate right away – I think about $20 is right for me now, but I’m more than happy to donate more later too as I get more value from the site.

All the best, you are a great player with a brilliant approach and attitude. At my work we get some geeky t-shirts now and then (I’m in the internet/social software business) and I’ll send you one along – size M?

Cheers,

-Kiat

Great site, “Mr Marlowe” ( from Singing Detective perhaps?)

I WILL contribute I promise: but first please tell me: Where do I start? I have a bass and all the bits, and was determined 2 years ago to get my act together and learn, but I still havent found the discipline, and/or I get frustrated. I LOVE Bass, and stupidly have always loved WATCHING my favourites (Geddy Lee, Bernard Edwards are mine) and realised when I was 40 that “duh, you should try it yourself!” So, tell me, what should I do first, I need strict discipline! Some say scales, others say forget scales. Im confused!

I sang your praises on the forum, but I wanted to post here, too. I am a musician/keyboard and just started learning bass 3 mths ago. I know the theory forwards and backwards, but YOU have put it all together for me with your versatility and simplicity of teaching style. Just discovered your site yesterday-not only have I grown by leaps and bounds on the bass literally overnight, almost everything is applicable to piano as well. Who would have thought to improve a melody one a pentatonic scale a 5th higher? Not me. Thanks! Periodic donations are forthcoming (just as soon as I quite paying my local bass teacher lol). You have a great karma!!!!

Thomas
I found your Youtube page several weeks ago and loved it! I hope this site is as good. I love your playing style also, as it’s very fluid and musical. Leave it to a Dane to come up with something this good! Denmark is such a great country and I wish more people new about the talented musicians who live there. I lived there for much of 1992 and 1993, in Vojens, I almost didn’t want to leave.
Much respect to you. You are a great talent!
Best wishes,
Nick

pudsy440: has any other member here noticed that playbassnow loads faster than it used to?? I'm finding it much faster lately, I haven't changed anything computer wise. Just curious. :)

MarloweDK: Well, i use different fx depending on the gig,and sometimes nothing at all. You can get far with just a octaver and autowah. Maybe add a fuzz/distortion of some kind

I could see how much respect he has for you and what an honor it was to see that come to fruition! Thanks for all you do... Cheers. Bryan in Kentucky

MarloweDK: Finn: Its hard to find good Band in a box patterns, i usually just use the "Funk 70s style". Ill think about tutorials. In the mean time guest teacher Paul Wolfe has done some

soporific: Thnx @jazzperdk. That's an amazing video and Mr DK is the main basscat:-)

Finn: Hey Thomas, I just downloaded Band in a Box, and I'm having a little trouble making a good backing track, could you possibly do a tutorial, or maybe link me one that you found helpful? I also had some questions regarding tetrachords, is there a way I could message you about them? Thanks, Finn
