Bass theory – Major over minor

FavoriteLoadingAdd to favorites YouTube Preview Image

DISCLAIMER! This is not a how to play lesson, but a lesson how to rethink scales, so there are NO breakdown/play slow sections.

I can play the Major scale pretty well, so when playing in a minor key, I tend to play the relative
Major scale, found a minor third or 3 half steps above the minor key (B minor to D Major in the example) Its the same notes, but it sounds a bit different since we are not focusing on the root B so much when thinking/playing D Major.

Backing track download here

Chord sequence is 4 bars
A G Bm Bm

It the first video from my new rehearsal space/studio and Im playing the first prototype of the
Sandberg MarloweDK signature bass:-)
Strings are Jim Dunlop, Nickel wound 45 – 105

Im not using any bassamp but playing over mixer/stereo

Sound is a bit compressed overall, but Im experimenting trying to get a higher output for Youtube videos

Camera used Canon 600D
Sound was captured on a Zoom Q3HD
Audio and video was synced post in Adobe Premiere
The iPhone/iPad app is ChordBot

Great and usefull lesson. I did that over “The thrill is gone” by BB King yesterday @ my local blues jam-session, had the audience in my pocket :D , and the guitarists played the game and support me during the solo, that was nice ;)

Hey Marlowe, Just a word to say thank you.. again…I did get this concept a long time ago, but you explain it so well it deserves a “Hats off”…you make better bass players all over the world. …P.S…Still waiting for that autograghed Photo. 8O) ..You really must not understand how influential you are…way too humble…Take Care!

MarloweDK: I dont know the song so i wouldnt know;-) But in general you need to be really good to play busy

hank: just heard the bassline to Gene Chandler's "Groovy Situation" Grooving bassline! My question is...Do you think it's too busy and would play something that busy in your band. I totally dig it but I imagine some people may think it is overdone. I'd like to read your thoughts. Keep up the great work!

MarloweDK: Thx Tonari, it was also a great experience to do

Tonari: Hi, Marlowe! I found on Youtube many recordings from Talkshowet Meyerheim, and in every video you are playing so cool lines. You are the best!

MarloweDK: Relatively low but without too much fretbuzz

MarloweDK: No I dont think so, sorry

TheNextBen: Hi Marlowe. What action height do you recommend for slapping on jazz bass (I know action is a VERY subjective matter) but anyway... thanks a lot. Lots of respect to you!

losgood: Hi Marlowe, Is the You Play Along site going to be back up at all?

MarloweDK: Lots of licks in Major, just transpose to F, on bass its easy. Search the site for Major

ttonkin: Marlowe, Do you have a lick in F major (on your site) that would sound 'right at around 134 BPMs? Thank you for your great work. Just joined the site.
