Hey Marlow.
I've been playing bass for 4 years now and i have learned alot from your website.
since 1 month ago i have been trying to learn a song but i just can find any tab's or sheets for the music. its a song of Dave Grusin
It is called Thankful 'N Thoughtful, i was wondering that maybe you could help me on the fill that the bass player uses to step up to the refrain. ive been having a real hard time on this part of the song so please help me,

Thankful N´Thoughtfull by Dave Grusin
if needed i can send you a Mp3 of it

I dont do requests unless i am planning on doin the tunes anyway, so you have to work it out yourself or hire me for a lesson;-)

Marlowe,

I am new to funk and bass playing. I have had my bass for years but have been so busy with other things. I now have time to begin. Where do you suggest I begin. Perhaps, with your practice logs? Let me know. My ultimate goal is to be able to speak freely with my bass. Thanks in advance!

Thanks MarloweDK.

Hey man you are UNBELIEVABLE ...
So I've been playing for a few months and I've been basically learning how to read bass clef and i have that down pat even though I still have some trouble regarding the different rhythms; sometimes they get tricky if I don't hear the song. Anyway, now I'm getting into theory and understanding music so that eventually I can make my own music and sit down without my bass and write a piece of music. My question is this: I understand the major chords and minor chords and I can pick them out in songs and I know the intervals for certain songs like when I play a blue song I recognize the interval patterns and can point out C maj. E min. B dim. whatever...but how does this relate to being able to play my own music in the future? How do I take what I know and convert it to useful information towards my own individual playing. I guess I just don't understand yet how chords and everything are relevant and how they'll improve my playing in the future. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated ... thank you
Hmmmm, big subject...
You are on the right path if you've learned so much in that short time span...
Music - yours, mine, everybody's - consists of notes , rhythm, melody, chords....the more knowledge we have - the easier we learn tunes, riffs, basslines, solos and the more tools we have for composing and improvising great music. Its like having a box full of tools, and maybe you dont know to use a certain tool today , but tomorrow when your bandleader ask you to play a bassline to a ie the chord Cmaj7 (which you now know) you suddenly understand the bigger picture and can use your "tool" - you can play the right notes for that chord. Its a process that takes time though , but stay on the path

WHY not "transcribe" all the "Lick of the day" video in .flv format, the only one I can read without any problem ... I missed a lot of videos cause all the readers I've downloaded don't work at 100 % ...THANKS AGAIN for your great work
Its an issue with my quicktime content host vs certain ISP's under Time Warner, next 2 weeks will tell if its a permanent problem. If so then ill transfer to new host and you will get both formats for all videos, but since it takes a lot time to redistribute 200+ videos i just do the newest ones for the time beeing

Hey there,
I have just started playing bass and need an amplifer. I have a limited budget and play in a beginner band in small venues. Do you recommend getting a combo type or a head and speaker box. If combo what amount of wattage is required to beard over a drummer etc - we don't play heavy metal stuff.
Thanks and I appreciate your efforts.
Hmmmm, combos are fine, but id rather have the possibility to change eather the head or the speaker.
And I have a small combo for theater gigs etc, but even for small clubs you need some wattage to compeat with the drummer; 300 - 400 watts i would recommend.
Ashdown makes some ok cheap combos, amps & cabs

Hi Dude,

Great site my friend, and you are just an amazing player! If I could ever be 25% as good as you Id be very happy!
Ive just donated so am looking forward to playing(or at least trying to!) the lick of the day transcriptions!
I have a couple of questions and Id be grateful if you could answer them!
I havent been playing slap for very long, but I play with my thumb facing downwards. Is it a good idea to change to the way you do it, or is it a case of 'do whatevers comfortable?'
and, are there any tab versions of your licks on here and if so how do I access them?
Thanks Marlowe for your time, and for inspring me!
xristy007
Do whatever is comfortable, but if you want to add doublethumbing you might want to change.
Worth to mention is that, many players play with the thumb down because of the length of their straps - how low their basses hang. FLea and TM Stevens for instance have their basses hanging "rock style" low, and play with their thumbs pointing down - (its impossible to play thumb up unles yuo have arms of an orangutang). And they get by fine, its just their style.
The transcriptions are both standard notation and tablature

I had to wait so long because they had a bass player but he will leave soon. They play 8 to 10 times a year here in South Germany and fill large halls. I like the quality of their music. I play in two other Bands together with the guitar player and the singer. I have lots of time since 2 years ago the company I worked for 25 years gave me some money and said goodbye. One of the best things that happened to me in my life. Now I am digging deeper into Bass playing. 5 years ago I watched the movie "standing in the shadows of motown" saw the Funk brothers in Bonn, Germany and bought the book about Jamersons life. Since that time I am back into Music like in the 70s when we played amercian clubs...
Have a nice Weekend!
Sounds like you wil be having a great time:)

Hi Thomas,
Got an email this morning that I am in a band now I want to play with since I was 15 (now I am nearly 56).
Learning from your website has helped me a lot to achieve this. Thank You so much! (I know who's gonna get a christmas present...)
Greetings from Heidelberg.
Thats great! Just curious: What band can be worth waiting 40 years for?

Fantastic resource, I never really listen to funk or Motown type stuff but you have turned me on to it.

Now my question....
What product or products do you use in your set up. What we hear you playing with and through. What drum machine do you use? Do you program your own tracks to help develop your style. Do you use a mixer so you can mix both the drum machine(or computer) and your bass and then listen with headphones? I'm looking for a devise that is easy to program and still will provide a good sound to practice with, then run that through a small mixing board to a good set of in-ear or phones. This will help my wife from going crazy when I play your videos over and over and over and over! Also I play at my church and they hand out a CD with material we will perform so I need this in my practice as well.

Thank you so much for sharing your talent with the world!!
rpm750
You are welcome:)
The question is easily answered - click on "recording videos with Korg px4d".
BTW You can buy it through this website by clicking the link of either the px4d or the new px5d

I've been an avid YouTube fan of yours for awhile now; I don't know why it took me so long to finally come check out your website. I LOVE it!

As a request, have you ever considered doing a video(s) on setting up a bass?

That is something every bass player could use, and with your collection of basses, you are in a position to share insights and quirks on the different models.

Cheers!
Not expert-like on that particular subject other than turning an allen wrench and raising/lowering some bridge screws

Can't get any of the vids in the categories section to load. I've reloaded my Quicktime player and all seems normal. Keep getting an "error on page". All well on your end?
Thank you for all you do!

Hi Marlow,
I´m new to this fantastic site and i´m really enjoying your skillfull teaching. However, I also have problems loading some of the vids. The video in section "downloads" is ok. The same with the six vids in section "Bass lessons". The other vids refuse to load no matter what alternative I use. I have a Macbook running Safari and have checked out both Opera and Firefox. But the problem appears on those browsers as well. Any suggestions?
No - works fine on my systems: Mac - safari and firefox, PC - IE and firefox - its Quicktime videos, so you have to check your Quicktime settings

Sorry, but I really don't understant what the C7 E7 A-to-Z'1-9 means... ... ... I figure this is the ultimate basic, but I don't get it...
Im playing a bass line that fits the chord C7 - to understand that you should learn a bit about chords, studybass.com has a fine section on that subject

Hi Marlowe, and thanks for the great site!

I have an Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray, and I think it's great, but I have a problem with the strings I currently use.
I use Ernie Ball bass strings, because they'd obviously sound great with a bass of the same kind.

The problem is that I get way to much buzz when the strings hit the frets. Should I try to raise or lower the stringheight, and do you recommend some strings specifically?
Buzz is too low action or neck needs adjusting - has nothing to do with string type, try rasing the action or get a luthier checkup

Any thoughts on the accuracy of the commercially available transcriptions of Jaco's version of 'Donna Lee' (Sean Malone and Matt Scharfglass, both available from Hal Leonard)? To my ear, there are a number of discrepancies in each, and some vital errors. Have you tackled this tune and do you often find a variance between the recorded versions and transcriptions you have checked out?
Havent done that specific tune, but ive yet to encounter the "perfect" transcription - but it is natural with music that is transcribed from audio - can be hard to judge whether ie a ghosted note is a bass note or maybe a drum beat..

Hi Marlowe,

Just recently found out this amazing site. You are awesome teacher.

I am playing bass for almost an year now but finding it hard to improvise while playing. That is the notes dont flow well and so it doesnt sound groovy,Also the improvisation is very repetitive on that scale.I can play basslines easily but get stuck at on-the-spot playing.Generally I try to improvise on Major scale progressions.

Thanks,
Ajay(India)

I don't get the same sound with my index (1) finger as I do with my middle finger. I always seem to catch my finger nail on the string and it sounds a lot less mellow.

Hi, i have a bass since 2004, and the last year i take a break (Bah, i take my bass sometime, but never seriously), just let the dust going on. Now, im back on the right way, but i want to take some lessons whit a teacher. How much time i give by week ? One hour by week ? One hour by two week ? One half hour by week ? I dont know :( I think, for the first weeks its good to take one hour a week, for breaking some bad positions, and after, maybe let take more time for working one what my teacher give me ? What you think of that Marlowe ? PS: That a hard question to ask to you, because you are a teacher he, "Why dont just go whit me ?"...
Depends of the material tought, and whatever works for you , but i think you should have time to digest and practice - its the practice bit that makes you better;-)

Have been a 5 string player for years and have dabbled in slap but always found it a struggle to slap with that low B and the closer string spacing. (I know lain Caaron and that Batista dude can do it but I just find it so more comfortable on the 4 string.) Now you have inspired me to dig out my 65 fender jazz and really get into some serious double thumping on the 4 string. however I find
that the tone with the standard pickups just does not seem to cut it for a contemporary slap sound. have you experimented with different pickups or do you just need to keep brand spanking new strings on all the time.
Well i think that for example Marcus Miller has a "contemporary slap sound" and thats stock pickups as far as i know.
No , i use stock pickups, but i of course change strings regularly

Hi Marlowe,

I've just joined a funk band, haven't played regularly with others for a number of years, and the hard work of fast fingerstyle playing is fairly new to me - my hands and wrists are getting sore - especially the left wrist (fretting hand). I usually sit while practicing on my own, and stand when with the band. It may just be the way I'm holding the instrument. Do you have an stretches or exercises you do before playing, to loosen up your arms and hands - or any other suggestions?

By the way, this is the very best site for any bass player, thorough, inspiring and fun - there's always something great here. I stumbled on it looking for "Hit Me with your Rhythm Stick" - really dug your vid. Hopefully I'll have the $$$ to donate soon. Thanks a bundle!

Cassady (from Melbourne, Australia)
No exercises other than bass exercises;-) To build indurance play the same bassline for 10 minutes nonstop, try some James Brown. One is often tense when playing live for the first couple of times, more parameters, stress, sound not the same etc

Bonjour Marlowe!!

Just curious, what made you decide on the Marcus Miller bass as your main bass?
Cheap, sounds good and easy to play

Hi There
Saw you play Glide by Pleasure and that was great! I love the bassist that played with Pleasure and have most of their stuff on vinyl. His name is Nathaniel Philips and he also plays on many other albums and one of my favourite Billy Cobham's lp BC, not on cd unfortunatly but check it out. I don't play bass anymore and sold my last 5 basses 5 years ago but I would like to get started again and really regret having sold my '76 musicman stingray in mint cond.-'83 musicman cutlas and 73 Fender Jazz bass. Oh dawg. Used to live in Cph. but now Berlin but hope to get a chance to come and see U play live sometime. Keep up the good work. Out.........

Hey man,

Just wondering what sort of effects you may be going though when you recording these videos? Compressor? What kind? In other words, I just want to know what gear you use besides your basses.

Thanks! (Sweet site by the way...very educational!)
All the info on this site;-)

Hi,
I started playing the bass about a couple of months ago and really like your website (verrrrry helpful!).
What kind of bass do you play with in your play-along video "The Real Thing - Narada Michael Walden"? It looks like a Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Bass, but I cannot tell because your does not have a cover over the pickups... I ask because I really like the sound of that bass!
Thanks for the help!
It is just that

Hi Thomas,
Love ur site, but please .. do shave.
Saw ur comments on the Chinese basses; have any experience with the ALBA Basses that are sold thru German eBay, like a P-Bass for € 60,00 (+10 shipping)?
I resent that kind of personal comments, im not promoting a beauty parlor or running for president.

AAHaaa! I think I'm just about to "Think" the actual slap more rightly! It sounds better when I use the thumb-knuckle a little higher up and let the sound bounce back instead of the more hitting-like feel in the doublethumbing, I guess! :)Thanks Man!

Hello Thomas ,
First, thanks for everything. I'd like to know if there's a mode specialy adapted for funk solo. Thanks
Not "Specially adapted", and it depends on the songs vibe, BUT dorian an and mixolydian are very popular for slap and funk in general;-)

Marlowe, just been trying to produce a riff for a blues song of my band, I spent over 2h trying to get anything together. The three notes you play harmonically gave me a brilliant idea! Thank you!

hi Mallow,
I'm come from thailand, i love your video very much and i have some little problems with doing double thumb technique when i play the "up stroke", it's like my thumb(nail) doesn't have enough power to hook up the string. How can I fix this problem? I tried many ways but they won't work. Thank you very much :)
Dont you know? If you are from Thailand you cannot use your thumb properly!...................................................
Well, either string action is too high or you use to much strenght - you should only "stroke"the string on the upstroke - woth a light touch
