Hey
Am very pleased to join your site. I am not happy with the the tone on nearly any bass guitar or amp that I use. Till now I have not used any fully professional jazz bass guitar – 1000$+ ones. Is that the problem though ? What is the gear you recommend for players of 20 yrs of exp playing funk and jazz with lots of solos. And what are your typical tone settings for a good funk/jazz tone ?
whats marlowe first of all i am glad i found your site it is already opening new ideas for my playing and straying away from just the penatonic scale. i do have a problem. staying focused during practice (when i do practice) between family and work my time is like a battle. mostly i have played by memorey of notes but it doesnt alway work especially when you play with a different band and new songs on the fly played in diff keys. what can i do to fast track my playing in gospel bass licks?
No magical recipe other than playing as much as possible, or turn down the ambitions, play simpler and be happier;-)
After three evenings of practising, I finally got there!
It is so great that you teach the stuff I always WANTED to play!! Thank you so much for sharing your great experience Marlowe, your work really helps a lot!!!
Correct me if I am wrong, but it has a similar sound/feel as the MM Jbass you have (maple neck, etc.)

A good Fender jazz bass with with a good setup and fairly new strings. Use medium gauge strings 45 to 105, thinner strings than that affects tone negatively especially when it comes to slap IMO
