Add to favorites A D7 chord (1,3,5,b7) note based lick with emphasis on the 3rd (F#) in both octaves. You can also look at it as playing selected notes from the D mixolydian scale (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, b7).
You can download the backing track here
first post!! getting back into playing bass at the age of 39 after nearly 20 years! I cannot thank you enough for what you are doing! I could not do it without you! thanks MarlowDK! you are a great man of great generosity!
Its just something i tried out for muting the strings when tapping, forgot to remove it. Im not using it on any licks
Hey Marlowe – what’s the white band around the strings just above the nut of your Jazz bass for? Is it a mute? If so, presumably it isn’t in use on this track?
Great sound tho! (And great playing, as always of course!)
Cheers, Al
Awesome. I really like the new set and camera angle. Keep up the good work!
My first post! And my version of this exercise, played over your backing track.

This was very cool lick, enjoyed it very much, thank you
The track IS without bass – hence “backing” track;-)
Oh I was thinking I could just download the backing track and no bass to practice the riff myself??
Its because i use the same backing track for different riffs
Hi there what a great riff. Am I been silly but when I click on the “download backing track” it takes me to yet another riff??
Great and very instuctive lick! Thanks you. A more descriptive comment (expecially on hands techniques) it would make it even more beautiful.
thx Phil and ill do the closeups
The new video camera is light years better and the grooves you create allow me to learn more than I ever thought was possible. Please try shooting a close-up framing of your hands in the slower versions. There is a lot of subtle hand technique going on that we can learn from.
Thank you very much,
Phil
ouch! great stuff. more finger funk please!
