L279 JB style funky groove in D9

FavoriteLoadingAdd to favorites Please enable Javascript and Flash to view this Blip.tv video.

A “James Brown style” funk groove with anticipated notes and the good old 3 note chromatic walk up from the 9th up to the Major third. The bass line starts on the 8th note before the downbeat 1 Ive recorded the backing track in Garageband (Mac), playing the 2 rhythm guitar parts myself and using a premade drumloop from the program.

The bass is fairly simple notewise and technique-wise, but the challenge is locking with the groove and hitting that D right on the 8th note before 1, especially after visiting the high register.

You can of course play the D on the open string, but the sound of the D on the 5th fret of the A string is so much thicker

Im emulating a P-bass by only using the neck pickup and rolling a bit back on the tonecontrol

The backingtrack can be dowloaded here

Ok, I kind of found the answer myself. It just works better. Little hard to get used to it, if you have only playde the rake.

Hi Thomas,

I love this lick!

Got one question though concerning the first 5 notes. Why do you go index, index, middle, index, middle. And not i, i, m, m, i. Is it to get the groove better? Because i learned to use the same finger when i go down one string. Hope its not a silly

Haha, yeah that’s what I mean. Of course you don’t have to play the songs.

Keep up the good work.

Would be great if you could post more like these:). Maybe some fast JB funk like sex machine, cold sweat etc.

Greatings from Holland
Well, i like to do my own grooves most, but of course in the JB vein, more coming up

pudsy440: has any other member here noticed that playbassnow loads faster than it used to?? I'm finding it much faster lately, I haven't changed anything computer wise. Just curious. :)

MarloweDK: Well, i use different fx depending on the gig,and sometimes nothing at all. You can get far with just a octaver and autowah. Maybe add a fuzz/distortion of some kind

niftywiz: Sir..plz advice me a Effects processor for Live performance.

Mr Tibbs: WAZZUP Marlowe DK, Awesome Job with Larry Graham and the others...Keep Doin Your Thing Brutha!!!:-)

brainlock1: Hey Marlowedk, I don't know how I missed the Larry Graham meeting that you had back earlier in the year, (both the interview and actually playing his bass onstage) but I just wanted to say congratulations! I could see how much respect he has for you and what an honor it was to see that come to fruition! Thanks for all you do... Cheers. Bryan in Kentucky

MarloweDK: Finn: Its hard to find good Band in a box patterns, i usually just use the "Funk 70s style". Ill think about tutorials. In the mean time guest teacher Paul Wolfe has done some

soporific: Thnx @jazzperdk. That's an amazing video and Mr DK is the main basscat:-)

Finn: Hey Thomas, I just downloaded Band in a Box, and I'm having a little trouble making a good backing track, could you possibly do a tutorial, or maybe link me one that you found helpful? I also had some questions regarding tetrachords, is there a way I could message you about them? Thanks, Finn
