L279 JB style funky groove in D9

FavoriteLoadingAdd to favorites YouTube Preview Image

A “James Brown style” funk groove with anticipated notes and the good old 3 note chromatic walk up from the 9th up to the Major third. The bass line starts on the 8th note before the downbeat 1 Ive recorded the backing track in Garageband (Mac), playing the 2 rhythm guitar parts myself and using a premade drumloop from the program.

The bass is fairly simple notewise and technique-wise, but the challenge is locking with the groove and hitting that D right on the 8th note before 1, especially after visiting the high register.

You can of course play the D on the open string, but the sound of the D on the 5th fret of the A string is so much thicker

Im emulating a P-bass by only using the neck pickup and rolling a bit back on the tonecontrol

The backingtrack can be dowloaded here

Ok, I kind of found the answer myself. It just works better. Little hard to get used to it, if you have only playde the rake.

Hi Thomas,

I love this lick!

Got one question though concerning the first 5 notes. Why do you go index, index, middle, index, middle. And not i, i, m, m, i. Is it to get the groove better? Because i learned to use the same finger when i go down one string. Hope its not a silly

Haha, yeah that’s what I mean. Of course you don’t have to play the songs.

Keep up the good work.

I love this one!
Would be great if you could post more like these:). Maybe some fast JB funk like sex machine, cold sweat etc.

Greatings from Holland
Well, i like to do my own grooves most, but of course in the JB vein, more coming up

Patricio: Hi MDK, Wow waht a great DVD... just spent a few hours learning the first few lessons... great quality and well taught... I'm very pleased with my purchase. If any improvment could be made I would only say could there be a 'repeat' funcion so that you can get a lick to play continually? or what aboutt a not showingthe BPM so that we can use the correct tempo using the drum patterns... overall a wonderful job... I look forward to more downloads in the future.... especially for IPad

MarloweDK: Great to hear, enjoy it:-)

Soulburn: Finally I donwloaded the DVD, its simply amazing. I wait for more material like this. Thanks you very much! Cheers from Argentina
